'It's really useful because we can look at the information from all different angles and it's so easy to use,' says Ms Hamilton. 'It will help us rationalise and standardise our suppliers and products, which in turn means we can get better prices.'

Fair Trade

Fair Trade is an ethical standard that is implemented at product level, since the product needs to traced from production to consumption to validate that the producer was paid a reasonable amount for their product, and the consumer can be confident that the product was sourced in a fair manner.

The main fairtrade federations are as follows:-

  • FLO Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International since 1997 main label only covers products
  • WFTO World Fair Trade Organization since 1989 label covers organisations
  • NEWS Network of European Worldshops  since 1994 network of European World shops
  • EFTA European Fair Trade Association

And in 1998 these four federations created FINE and informal working group to try and harmonise standards.
